1. Vertigo & Moon Bar, Banyan Tree Sathorn

Sixty-one floors up on South Sathorn Road, this is the open-air rooftop that anchors every Bangkok postcard. The 360-degree view runs from Lumpini's green rectangle east to the river bend west, with the Chao Phraya glittering below. Cocktails run $18-24, a bottle of Singha $12, and the dress code (no shorts, no sandals, no sleeveless shirts for men) is enforced at the lift. Arrive by 5:45 pm for a table before sunset at 6:30; walk-ins after 7 usually stand at the Moon Bar rail.

It wins the ranking because nothing else in the city gives you this much open sky with this much polish. The catch: two drinks and a plate of edamame is $60 before you notice. If you want the view without the tab, come for one cocktail at golden hour and leave. Skip in June-September when the rooftop closes at the first thunder rumble, which in monsoon season means most evenings.

2. Lebua Sky Bar, State Tower, Bang Rak

The gold-domed bar on the 63rd floor of State Tower, made famous by The Hangover Part II. The dome itself is a photo op; the actual bar is a curved counter with a straight drop to Silom traffic 250 m below. Signature Hangovertini is $28, house cocktails $22-26, beers $14. Dress code strict: closed shoes, long trousers, collared shirt for men. It's touristy — you’ll queue for the dome photo behind twenty others — but the view down Silom and across to Thonburi is genuinely unmatched at this altitude.

Rank two because it's the same league of view as Vertigo with a slightly worse drinks list and a much heavier tour-bus feel. Come if you want the film shot and you’re only in Bangkok once. Book the adjoining Sirocco restaurant if you want a table on the terrace rather than a rail-lean; minimum spend around $120 a head. Skip if you resent paying $28 for a mediocre martini in a queue.

3. Octave, Marriott Sukhumvit 57

Three-level rooftop on Thonglor's edge, with the top deck a circular bar wrapped in low sofas. Views point north to Sukhumvit's neon and south toward the CBD towers. Cocktails $12-16, beers $8, which by Bangkok rooftop standards is nearly reasonable. No dress code beyond common sense. It fills fast after 8 pm on weekends with a mid-thirties Sukhumvit crowd; go before 7:30 or after 11 for a seat.

It ranks third because the price-to-view ratio is the best in the top tier, and the vibe is a real bar rather than a photo set. The catch is that at 49 floors you’re lower than the Sathorn giants, so the skyline reads more mid-city than god's-eye. Perfect for a second night when you’ve done the postcard shots and want a proper evening out. BTS Thong Lo is a 10-minute walk; taxi from Sukhumvit is $3.

4. Above Eleven, Fraser Suites Sukhumvit 11

Peruvian-Japanese kitchen with a rooftop garden bar on the 33rd floor, tucked into the Sukhumvit 11 nightlife strip. The view is mid-range — you see the Asok interchange and the Sukhumvit spine — but the space itself is the draw: fake grass, tree canopies, hammocks, a proper open-air feel rather than a hotel terrace. Pisco sours are $12, ceviche plates $14-18. Kitchen matters here; you can make a real dinner of it, which most rooftops can’t.

Fourth because it's the best rooftop for actually spending three hours rather than one cocktail and a photo. The crowd is a mix of Sukhumvit 11 pre-clubbers and hotel guests; louder after 10 pm when the DJ starts. Walk from BTS Nana in 8 minutes. Skip if you specifically want the tallest-view experience; this is a garden in the sky, not a viewing deck.

5. Char, Hotel Indigo Wireless Road

Twenty-sixth floor rooftop grill and bar in Ploenchit, with the terrace facing the green mass of Lumpini Park and the Sathorn skyline beyond. Lower than the giants but the park foreground gives depth the taller bars lack. Cocktails $13-15, a decent Thai-influenced list, and the steaks (from $32) are actually good if you want dinner attached. Reservations recommended Friday-Saturday.

Ranks fifth because the view is quietly one of the best framed compositions in the city — the park lit up green against tower lights — and the bar itself is calm rather than clubby. Skew older, thirties-plus, hotel guests and Ploenchit locals. BTS Ploen Chit is a 4-minute walk. Come for a first-night dinner-and-drinks combo when you don’t want to commit to a full rooftop production.

6. Cloud 47, Silom

Forty-seventh floor of United Center on Silom Road, and by some distance the best cheap rooftop in the city. Beers $4, cocktails $8-10, no dress code, no minimum. The view faces east across Lumpini and north up Rama IV — not the postcard angle but a real, wide, working skyline. Furniture is plastic; service is slow; the lift takes two changes to find. None of that matters at these prices.

Sixth because it isn’t polished, but it's the only rooftop where you can drink for two hours and pay under $30. Popular with backpackers who’ve graduated from Khao San and expats who resent Sky Bar prices. Go on a clear night after monsoon (November-February) for the sharpest view. BTS Sala Daeng, 6-minute walk. Skip if you want a table with a view — those are first-come and gone by 7.

7. Attitude, Avani+ Riverside

Twenty-sixth floor on the Thonburi side of the river, and the only bar on this list where the view is the river itself rather than the skyline from above. You look east straight across the Chao Phraya at the Bang Rak towers, with boats sliding beneath. Cocktails $14-18, sharing plates $12-20, and an infinity pool along one edge (for hotel guests only). Book a river-facing sofa in advance for sunset.

Ranks seventh because the angle is different and worth it once — most Bangkok photos are taken from Sathorn looking across, and this is the reverse shot. Getting there means a taxi over Taksin Bridge or the hotel's free shuttle boat from Sathorn pier. Come on your last night when you’ve seen the skyline from inside it and want to see it from the outside. Skip if you’re staying in Sukhumvit and can’t be bothered with the river crossing.

8. Tichuca, Thonglor Soi 15

Rooftop on the 46th floor of the T-One building, styled as a glowing jellyfish tree at the centre of the deck. It's the Instagram rooftop, and it knows it — queues on Friday and Saturday from 8 pm, walk-in impossible after 9. Cocktails $14-18, and the drinks list actually delivers rather than coasting on the aesthetic. View is north Sukhumvit, mid-level altitude, decent but not the reason you’re here.

Eighth on the ranking because the experience is the space rather than the panorama, and half the crowd is queuing to photograph the tree rather than looking outward. That said, it's the most fun rooftop in the city if you’re in your twenties or early thirties and want a night that starts with a view and ends dancing. Book online 48 hours ahead; walk-ins on Tuesday-Wednesday only.
