What to expect at Chatuchak Weekend Market
Chatuchak — locally shortened to J.J. — is the market against which every other market in Bangkok is measured. Around 8,000 stalls occupy 35 acres of covered alleys grouped into 27 numbered sections: antiques and Buddhist art in one corner, dogs and songbirds in another, vintage denim in a third, then plants, ceramics, silver, herbal medicines, hill-tribe textiles, second-hand cameras and a food court that alone could occupy a Sunday. Roughly 200,000 people pass through on a good weekend day. It is chaotic, sweaty and, once you learn the sections, entirely navigable.
Come with a plan. Print or screenshot the section map — the app 'JJ Market Plus' is more useful than Google Maps, which cannot see the internal alleys. Broad orientation: Sections 1-8 have antiques, art, books and second-hand. Sections 9-25 are clothing and home goods. Sections 26-27 are food and plants. The best food is in and around Section 26 — grilled river prawns at Jay Fai's cousin's stall, coconut ice cream at Guay Tiew Rua Thanong's, and a queue-worthy pandan waffle stall at the north gate. Bargain, but politely — start at 60% of asking.
Go at 9am to beat the heat. The market is not air-conditioned and by 13:00 it is genuinely unpleasant. Or, better, come Friday 18:00-24:00 for the wholesale night when the sellers unload the week's remainders at half price and the atmosphere is cooler and more local. MRT Chatuchak Park exit 1 drops you at the north entrance, BTS Mo Chit exit 1 at the east. Bring cash — many stalls don’t take card and ATMs at the market charge foreign card fees.
