What to expect at Khao San Road
Khao San Road is a 400-metre strip in Banglamphu that has been Bangkok's backpacker district since the mid-1980s. For a long time it was purely a traveller ghetto — cheap guesthouses, banana pancakes, faded copies of Lonely Planet books — but the shape of it has changed. Today the demographic is roughly one-third international backpackers, one-third young Bangkok Thais out for the party, and one-third middle-class Asian tourists coming to see what the fuss is about. In 2020 the road was resurfaced and given proper pavements; the pad Thai stalls and roving vendors and 4am cocktail carts survived.
A walk end to end takes ten minutes, but you don’t come for the distance. You come for the mass and mood: neon sign after neon sign, buckets of Sang Som and Red Bull for $4, deep-fried scorpions on skewers for the Instagram, tattoo shops with English signage, hair-braiding stalls, and open-air pubs like The Club and Mulligans. Ram Buttri, the parallel street north of Khao San, is quieter, more Thai, and has better restaurants and street food (Jok Pochana for boat noodles). Soi Rambuttri arcs between them.
Best time to arrive is around 20:00: eat pad Thai from a cart, drink a Chang beer on a plastic stool, walk it once, then either dig in for the night or retreat to a quieter cocktail bar in Banglamphu (The Bank on Phra Athit is good). Do not sleep on Khao San itself unless you want music until 2am; Banglamphu and Phra Athit have proper hotels within five minutes' walk. Combine with Wat Bowonniwet three minutes north for cultural balance, and take the Chao Phraya boat from Phra Athit pier back to Sathorn.
