What to expect at Wat Saket (Golden Mount)
The Golden Mount is a curiosity: an 80-metre artificial hill built in the early 19th century after a huge chedi commissioned by Rama III collapsed under its own weight in the soft Bangkok clay. Rama V eventually crowned the ruin with a smaller gilded chedi holding a relic of the Buddha, and the whole mound was landscaped into a spiralling temple garden. It remains the tallest structure in Rattanakosin and, unusually for the old city, gives you a viewpoint — because everything around it is limited by height rules protecting the Grand Palace skyline.
The climb is 344 steps but they are gentle, wrapping around the hill through shady trees hung with brass bells that pilgrims strike as they pass. Halfway up there is a small cave shrine and a wall of memorial plaques; at the top, a terrace runs all the way around the golden chedi. From here you see Loha Prasat's black spires, the roofs of Wat Suthat, the Democracy Monument down Ratchadamnoen Klang, and on a clear evening the towers of Silom in the distance. The temple below is quieter — a working monastery with a crematorium once used for cholera victims in the 1820s.
This is a sunset temple. Come at 17:00, walk up slowly, and you will reach the top just as the light turns gold. The November Loi Krathong festival takes over the mount with a candle procession and a red-cloth ceremony wrapping the chedi — book a hotel in Phra Nakhon that week if you can. Wat Ratchanatdaram with its Loha Prasat is directly across Boriphat Road; do them together in ninety minutes.
