Why people stay in Thonglor
Thonglor is Sukhumvit Soi 55, a 3 km road running north from the BTS station of the same name, and it's the single most self-conscious neighbourhood in Bangkok. Every second building is a boutique, a design-forward restaurant, a rooftop cocktail bar, a serviced apartment tower for expats on packages, or a community mall named something like J-Avenue or The Commons. The crowd is Bangkok's professional class — 25-45, Japanese-influenced fashion, drives a Lexus — plus a rotating population of Tokyo expats (Thonglor has the biggest Japanese community outside Japan) and a serious slice of the design-conscious travel crowd.
It works because the density is real. Within the first 1 km of the BTS station you have maybe 200 bars and restaurants, from $2 street food (Boat Noodles on Soi 55/2) to $200 tasting menus (Le Du, Bo.Lan, Sühring). The community malls — The Commons on Soi 17, Seenspace on Soi 13 — are curated food-and-shopping courts with a dozen good places each. The nightlife is heavier than anywhere else on this list: cocktail bars until 2am, clubs (Beam, Onyx nearby at RCA) until 4am, and a robust after-hours scene of hotel bars if you know where to look.
The trade-offs: Thonglor is expensive by Bangkok standards. A cocktail is $12-18, a dinner for two at a real restaurant is $60-100, a decent hotel room is $100-180. Traffic on Soi 55 is genuinely bad from 5pm-9pm — a taxi from the BTS to Soi 25 (halfway up) can take 25 minutes. Motorbike taxis solve this ($1-2 for any distance) but come with the usual motorbike-taxi caveats. The neighbourhood is also long and thin — north of Soi 17 you’re increasingly relying on transport rather than walking.
Suits: couples with $150-plus a night budget, food-and-cocktail travellers, second-time visitors who did the temples already and want a real city trip, anyone treating Bangkok as a shopping-and-eating base. Skip if: you’re budget-conscious (Ari or Ekkamai give you 80% of the experience at 60% of the cost), you have kids under 10 (it's an adult neighbourhood after 8pm), or you want to walk to the Grand Palace.
The core zone is BTS Thonglor station up to Soi 55/17 (The Commons) — most of the best bars, restaurants and hotels are here. Marriott Executive Apartments and Somerset Sukhumvit Thonglor sit at Sukhumvit and Soi 55, $130-200 with kitchens, best for stays over four nights. 137 Pillars Suites (Soi 39, 5 min walk from BTS) is the fine-dining hotel splurge at $250-450. Compass Skyview Hotel and Kimpton Maa-Lai (both around Ploenchit but walkable to Thonglor) are the design-hotel picks at $180-280. Budget-wise, look at Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit ($90 low-season) or the Sacha's Hotel on Soi 10 ($60, small, decent). Avoid the north end of Thonglor (past Soi 25) unless you specifically want proximity to Cassia or Iron Fairies northern outposts.

Marriott Sukhumvit at Thonglor Soi 57, floors 45-49. 360° view, cocktails $14-18, best at 6pm for sunset. No reservations for the outdoor bar; the indoor lounge takes bookings. Dress smart-casual (no shorts, no flip-flops). Open 5pm-2am.
Sukhumvit Soi 55, Soi Thonglor 17. Three-storey open-air community mall built around the market concept. Roast (café), Peppina (Neapolitan pizza $12-16), Roots Coffee, and about 20 more stalls. Kids' play area on the top floor. Open 8am-midnight, quietest 3-5pm.
Rung Reung Boat Noodles at 10/2 Sukhumvit Soi 26 (technically Phrom Phong side but easy walk from Thonglor BTS). $2 for a bowl of intense pork or beef broth with noodles. Open 8:30am-4:30pm. Order at least three bowls per person — they’re small. Cash only, English menu.
Thonglor has the highest concentration of Japanese food outside Japan. Aoi (Soi Thonglor 5, kaiseki $60), Tenshino (tempura $30), and Kabocha Sushi are the reference-grade options. For casual, hit the izakayas around Nihonmura Mall (Soi 55/26). Booking essential for weekend nights.
Rabbit Hole (Soi 55/8, three-storey speakeasy, cocktails $12-15, opens 7pm) and Vesper (a taxi to Sathorn but the sister bar Vesper Cocktail Bar in Sukhumvit does the same) are the reference bars. For something newer, Tropic City (Convent, Silom) is the tiki-inflected option worth crossing the city for.
Not in Thonglor proper — take a taxi 30 min north to Rangsit Stadium ($10). Sunday night fights, $15 for a proper ringside seat. The Rajadamnern (in Phra Nakhon) and Lumpinee (Ram Intra) stadiums are the two big city stadiums, but Rangsit is smaller, cheaper, and closer to real Muay Thai.

Getting around Thonglor
From Suvarnabhumi: Airport Rail Link to Makkasan ($1.30, 20 min), MRT to Phetchaburi, transfer to BTS Sukhumvit Line at Asok, two stops east to Thonglor ($0.60). Total $2.50, 50 min. Metered taxi $10-13 including tolls, 30-50 min — usually faster in off-peak hours. From Don Mueang: taxi $12-15, 40-55 min. Inside Thonglor the BTS station puts you at Sukhumvit main road; going up the 3 km length of Soi 55 you’ll use motorbike taxis (Grab or the orange-vested guys at the BTS entrance, $1-2), taxis (metered but slow in traffic), or walking (fine for the first 15 minutes, punishing past that). The BTS runs 6am-midnight. Motorbike taxis and Grab bikes run all night.
Questions about Thonglor
Depends what you want. For pure sightseeing (temples, palaces), no — you’re paying a premium for a location further from what you’re visiting. For food, nightlife, shopping and being at the centre of contemporary Bangkok, yes — nowhere else in the city has this density of good bars and restaurants. If you’re splitting Bangkok as three nights old-city plus four nights Thonglor, that split makes sense.
Bangkok traffic is legendary and Thonglor is not spared. Soi 55 during rush hour (5pm-9pm) can crawl at walking pace. The rule: BTS wherever you can, motorbike taxi for the last-mile on Soi 55, and never book a taxi to arrive at somewhere at a specific time during rush hour — build in 45 minutes buffer. For airport runs, leave a full hour earlier than Google Maps suggests.
No. It's one of the safest neighbourhoods in the city. The main risks are drink prices (you’ll be surprised at the bill), being over-served (bars pour heavier here), and taxi meter negotiations after 2am (some drivers refuse the meter — walk away or use Grab). Pickpocketing at busy clubs is minor but real; leave the flashy watch in the safe.
Soi 11 (five stops west) is louder, younger, drunker, mostly foreigners, and cheaper. Thonglor is quieter, older, mostly Thai and Japanese, and more expensive. Soi 11 has hostels; Thonglor has serviced apartments. Soi 11 has ladies bars; Thonglor doesn’t. If you’re 25 and want a wild first-time-in-Bangkok night out, go to Soi 11.
